PREPARATION FOR LESSON 2
THE NORMATIVE PERSPECTIVE: GOD AND HIS WORD

In preparation for this lesson, read chapters 1 and 2 of Romans. Write down things you learn about revelation from these chapters. What kinds of revelation are mentioned? What sorts of things are revealed?

This Lesson will be divided into two major sections:

God as Standard
Word as Standard

GOALS

In this lesson, we would like to accomplish the following:

1. We hope you will grow in your admiration for God as our ultimate ethical standard, and in your appreciation for the importance of His normative revelation for making ethical decisions.

2. We hope you will understand in what sense God is our ultimate ethical standard, learn to distinguish the different kinds of normative revelation, and understand how these forms of revelation relate to each other.

3. We hope you make some changes in your life as a response to the teachings of this lesson, especially in strengthening your commitment to look to God's character and His revealed ethical norms in order to make decisions.

OBJECTIVES

When you have done the following, it will show that the goals are met:

1. Use all the resources and complete all the written assignments of the lesson, expressing your own thoughts and attitudes regarding the importance of knowing God's character and His normative revelation for making ethical decisions.

2. Obtain a satisfactory grade on the test, demonstrating that you understand in what sense God Himself is our ultimate moral standard, that you can distinguish the meaning of general revelation, special revelation, and existential revelation, that you understand how these forms of revelation relate to each other, and that you can identify the meaning of "illumination" and "internal leading."

3. Answer the application questions in the study guides, showing how you have applied the teachings of the lesson to your life.
